A second-annual golf outing on Sept. 29 in Coopersburg will help make Paul Wensel Jr.'s life a little bit better. According to Angie Mountain of PhillyBurbs.com, the "Play for Paul" golf outing will occur at Locust Valley Golf Club. Wensel Jr., of North Wales, is a graudate of Lansdale Catholic High School, according to the article. He was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) in December 2010, according to the article. New Owner Robert Ashford doing everything to keep popular local course afloat.
Upper Saucon Township resident Robert Ashford became the owner of Locust Valley Golf Club on Aug. 1. He also accumulated the $354,960 in back taxes owed by the club. And now he's asking for tax relief to keep the course alive. Ashford and attorney James Omdahl gave a presentation during Monday’s township Board of Supervisors meeting, agreeing to pay all delinquent real estate taxes -- but on the basis of a market-based assessment of the property's value. At a previous supervisors meeting, Ashford asked for elimination of a 4 percent amusement tax. “Locust Valley is a great golf course,” Ashford said at Monday's meeting. “But it’s showing its age. Upper Saucon Township has given the Golf Clubs a 30-day notice to pay or face a lien.
Upper Saucon Township will seek to issue liens for around $160,000 in back taxes from Center Valley Golf Club, closed as of October 2011, and Locust Valley Golf Club and Pro Shop. “It’s a substantial amount of money that we are owed,” said Township Manager Thomas Beil. Locust Valley Golf Club, located on Valley Road, owes $60,000 and Center Valley Golf Club owes around $100,000 in taxes known as amusement taxes, says Beil. Amusement taxes are levied against business that collect admissions or course fees. The taxes are based on the most recent filed tax return.
