Registration is open for the Saucon to Boston 5K Run/Walk for the One Fund, which will be held on the Saucon Rail Trail on Sunday, June 9.
A local resident is organizing a 5K run/walk on the Saucon Rail Trail, to raise money for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Jerry Steward presented an overview of his plan for the Saucon to Boston 5K Run/Walk for the One Fund to Hellertown Borough Council May 6, explaining that the event had already been approved by the Saucon Rail Trail Oversight Commission. Council unanimously approved a motion to allow the event to take place on the borough's portion of the rail trail. The run—which is scheduled for Sunday, June 9 starting at Grist Mill Park—will head south into Lower Saucon Township, where Steward said volunteers will be stationed at the Meadows and Old Mill Road trail crossings. Southern Lehigh boys will take on Salisbury in the Colonial League baseball championship on Thursday.
The Colonial League boys baseball championship Thursday will pit division leader Salisbury against Southern Lehigh, which ranks second. The Spartans defeated the Catasauqua Rough Riders 14-4 Tuesday in the semi-final game. Southern Lehigh junior pitcher Petey Long was named to the Colonial League All-Star team, according to a Lehigh Valley Live report. The baseball championship game will be played at 7 p.m. at Limeport Stadium.

A home run hit by Phillies slugger Ryan Howard fulfilled the wish of a 7-year-old Center Valley fan who is blind.
Ryan Howard's second-inning home run in Friday's game against the Miami Marlins came at the request of A.J. Moncman, 7, a fan from Center Valley, according to a Lehigh Valley Live report. The boy met Howard before the game as part of "Teacher Appreciation Night" festivities that included honoring A.J.'s teacher, Bethann Molinari. A.J. was diagnosed with Leber’s congenital amaurosis (LCA) at an early age, according to USA Today. LCA is a genetic eye disorder that primarily affects the retina and causes severe vision impairment from a young age, according to the National Institutes of Health. Southern Lehigh defeats Notre Dame-Green Pond this week to secure a baseball playoff spot.
The Spartans are going to the Colonial League baseball playoffs, which begin May 14. They beat Notre Dame-Green Pond, 7-1, on Monday and stretched their winning streak to eight games, according to a Lehigh Valley Live report. The Spartans are ranked second with Salisbury leading the division, according to the Colonial League website.
Runners are being encouraged to bring as little as possible with them this year.
Following the backpack bombings at the Boston Marathon two weeks ago, runners in this year's Broad Street Run in Philadelphia won't be able to tote their gear in a backpack, race organizers announced in a mass email to participants Monday.
