U. Saucon Girl Who Lost Cancer Battle to Be Remembered at Symposium

Caitlin Dickey will be remembered at the 5th Annual Symposium on Childhood Cancer in Philadelphia Saturday.

The indomitable spirit of an Upper Saucon Township girl who lost a courageous battle with childhood cancer in the spring will be honored this weekend at the 5th Annual Symposium on Childhood Cancer in Philadelphia, which is being held in her memory, according to organizers.

Caitlin Dickey "had attended the symposium in years past throughout her five-year battle with brain cancer," a press release indicated.

Nine-year-old Caitlin was a fourth-grader at Joseph P. Liberati Intermediate School in the Southern Lehigh School District when she passed away May 17.

The 5th Annual Symposium on Childhood Cancer, which is sponsored by The Lemon Society of Philadelphia (LSP), will be held Saturday, Aug. 3 from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at The Westin Philadelphia, 99 S. 17th St., Philadelphia.

"The symposium, which is a free event open to all family members, patients and their siblings directly impacted by childhood cancer, is designed as an educational resource providing families with the opportunity to learn about issues and topics of childhood cancer from treatment and beyond while meeting in a group setting," according to the press release.

It is being hosted by the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

"The event grew from the insight of Foundation Co-Executive Directors Liz and Jay Scott, who as parents of a child with cancer themselves, recognized the need for families to learn about the aspects and effects of treatment," the press release said.

The Lemon Society of Philadelphia is a group of young professionals who support Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, raising nearly $90,000 in 2012.

A portion of those funds raised are underwriting 100 percent of the cost of the 2013 symposium.
