The Southern Lehigh School District announced via its website Tuesday evening that schools will open two hours later than normal with a modified kindergarten schedule Wednesday, due to the extreme cold that is still gripping the area.

Schools were closed on Tuesday due to the Arctic air mass, which has produced dangerously low temperatures and wind chill factors all throughout the region.

Temperatures are forecast to begin to moderate on Wednesday, and highs could reach the 50s by the weekend, according to the National Weather Service.

The district also announced that its offices will open Wednesday at the regular time.
