Poor Planning Allegation 'Insulting,' School Board Member Says

Dr. Elizabeth Stelts—who chairs the Southern Lehigh School Board's facilities committee—didn't attribute the critique to anyone in particular, but alluded at a meeting to questions about the long-term planning efforts of district officials.

In light of the long hours that Southern Lehigh School District administrators and staff have recently spent compiling information and analyzing data about the district's elementary schools, school board member Dr. Elizabeth Stelts said a criticism of the district for not having a "master plan" for its buildings was "frankly insulting."

Stelts—who chairs the board's facilities committee—didn't attribute the critique to anyone in particular, but alluded at the Nov. 11 board meeting to questions about the long-term planning efforts of district officials.

She said the reason recent meetings, hearings and discussions about the future of the district's facilities—including two elementary schools that need millions of dollars in repairs—have been held is because of the district's long-term planning efforts.

“People were saying things as fact that just aren’t facts and questioning a lot of things that are wrong," Stelts said. "The people in our administration work very hard to do their best for this district. To insult them like that—it’s uncalled for."
