L. Milford Residents Urged to Attend SLSB Meetings

Township officials are encouraging residents to voice their support for Lower Milford Elementary School, which needs millions of dollars in repairs.

Since an Aug. 28 special meeting of the Southern Lehigh School Board, Lower Milford Township officials have tried to rally their residents in support of the township's elementary school.

The possible closure of the 63-year-old rural school—which needs millions of dollars in renovations, according to a school district presentation—was a topic of discussion at the meeting, where numerous teachers and parents urged the board to save it.

Lower Milford Township supervisor Mike Snovitch also told the board the school is an important part of the local infrastructure, since it is the only building large enough to serve as an emergency shelter in the township.

In a news update posted Sept. 5 on the Lower Milford Township website, township officials encouraged residents "make sure to attend school board meetings and voice your concerns on this subject."

"The (school) board will need to make decisions on which plan to follow, and all our input is very important," the update says. "Let’s not let our local school get shut down."

The Fall 2013 edition of the Lower Milford Township newsletter also included a pre-meeting update about the status of the school discussion, and told residents that "the decision of the school board may impact everyone."

At the Aug. 28 meeting, Southern Lehigh School Board members stressed that community input is an important part of a process that is just beginning.

No final decisions about the future of Lower Milford and Hopewell Elementary schools have yet been made, board members said.

They also encouraged concerned residents to attend future school board meetings, which are normally held the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7:30 p.m. at Southern Lehigh High School.
