Simmons/Deely Race One Vote Apart in Lehigh, Hundreds in Northampton

With almost all the votes counted, the race for the 131st district in Lehigh County is only one vote apart, but more than 400 apart in Northampton County; Simmons leads both.

For the rest of the Lehigh Valley, election season is over.

The race between incumbent Justin Simmons (R) and Kevin Deely (D) was too statistically close for election officials certify election night. Currently, Simmons is ahead of Kevin Deely by only one vote in Lehigh County and 430 in Northampton County.

In Lehigh County, outstanding ballots include 60 provisional ballots, six emergency responders and four ballots where voters didn't provide proper identification and still could.

In Northampton County, outstanding ballots include 16 military ballots and 17 first responders.

The poll workers and election officials in Lehigh and Northampton counties have worked extremely hard to ensure a fair election," said Simmons' campaign manager. "[Kevin] Deely has every right to ask for a recount; however, the numbers are not going to change. Mr. Deely ran a good campaign, but it's over and time to move forward."

But Deely is standing his ground until all the votes are counted.

"I'm not going to concede while there are votes still out there," said Deely in a phone interview with Patch. "I don't see why there's such a rush to concede. I don't see why it's such a problem to wait until the votes are counted."

With margins this tight, Deely says he isn't ruling out a recount at this time.

"We would possibly be interested in doing a recount because we want to see that democracy was served. I want to make sure that each person in the 131st district has a voice."

Deely says many voters in the 131st district are supportive of a recount.

"The support [after Election Day] has been fantastic. It's so humbling to see how many people out there say 'I'm with you, whatever you need.' People keep coming out of the woodwork."

Some Election Day voters ran into long lines with waits of almost two hours.

According to an email from Lehigh County election official Tim Benyo, the rest of the military ballots will be counted Wednesday, the final day to receive military personnel ballots.

Of course Mr. Deely wants a recount its not his money being spent and he keeps his name in the paper for just a little longer. What he doesn't realize is that the voters that really knew him voted against him 60 to 40 percent. And the voters in Allentown just voted straight Democrat. Obama got those votes not deely. Time to go back to your classroom Mr. Deely you lost.

Justin Simmons has been an excellent Representative. More, he has had the unusual integrity to refuse perks such as raises and use of a government car. He has promised to limit his service to two terms because he believes in term limits. (We should all believe in term limits in order to assist in "cleaning up" our government, locally, state-wide, and federally. ) What greater proof that Rep. Simmons' intentions are to improve PA as his ultimate goal, not to simply serve himself? Deely, on the other hand, was unable to even address one or two issues during the debates; so as a candidate, he was less than encouraging. Why, then, contrasting the two candidates, did he receive so many votes. I would hate to think it was union driven ... but I do! I would welcome an election where people vote for the person whose intentions are to improve the entire society rather than for those whose intentions are to address particular personal agendas. Oh, I know, utopia is only a figment of one's imagination!
Gregg Potter November 12, 2012 at 04:44 PM
So if this was reversed, you would certainly advise Justin Simmons, to just walk away. Yeah, right!
Tanya Bryant November 12, 2012 at 05:36 PM
Gregg Potter, another union hack heard from!
Crestor Januvia November 12, 2012 at 05:42 PM
Democrats are the party of hand outs. They don't vote for the general good of society or the country. They vote to enrich their own pockets. Union wonks who want their pensions protected, Gays who want gay marriage, hispanics who want the hispanic invasion to continue, blacks who want the welfare state to be expanded. For Democrats, it's all about "what are you going to give ME after I vote for you".
Fae Danner November 12, 2012 at 05:45 PM
Correction: Justin Simmons promised to run for three terms, not two, as I erroneously stated in my original comment. As to Greg Potter's comment: It does not seem to be related to my message; however, if ever I mistakenly vote for anyone I discover to be backed by groups I believe to be in opposition to my conviction for honest government that is intended to benefit all of society, I WOULD absolutely advise that candidate "to just walk away." My concern lies with the ability of this country to provide a proud, respectable, and sustainable way of life for our future generations. And, thus far, it appears that greed and self-serving forces are working very hard to prevent that from occurring! I understand that there are varying perspectives on matters of this sort. I would simply ask that we all reflect on the issues in as responsible a manner of which we are capable; and God bless us all for our right to freedoms of thought and speech!
Gregg Potter November 12, 2012 at 06:05 PM
Excuse me, you don't know me, but you resort to calling names. So you can use Google, how impressive. I have been on both sides of the work fence, management and union and voted for Reagan twice. I will put my record for work in the community up against anybody. I am certainly not ashamed of my union afiliation and if that doesn't work out to your liking, somehow I will manage to get some sleep tonight.
Gramma24 November 12, 2012 at 07:31 PM
Must be a proud grad of SLHS (like Saint Justin).......since when does a 1 vote margin in Lehigh County equal a 60/40 split?
Mary Anne Looby November 12, 2012 at 09:16 PM
I am a bit confused about "first responders" not having votes counted. If there is a chance, even a slim one, why don't first responders fill out an absentee balot? If they are available to vote, then the absentee balot gets canceled. I am also wondering about voters who did not provide proper identivcation, but still could, what is that about? I get Military voters, I am not sure I understand what a provisional voter is. Can anyone explain this stuff??
Bob Linney November 12, 2012 at 09:16 PM
Who says, "My vote doesn't count"? That is the best lesson to learn from this news
Interested Observer November 12, 2012 at 09:35 PM
The fact people keep missing is that Deely is more than 400 votes behind and there are not enough uncounted votes to make up that margin. This race is in BOTH Lehigh and Northampton Counties, not just Lehigh. Deely cannot win, it is that simple. Other Republicans who lost by many fewer votes (200 total) and other Democrats who lost by many, many fewer votes (less than 100 total) have already conceded because they understand it is over. Not sure why Mr. Deely refuses to admit this and move on graciously the way those others have - other than it keeps him in the news. A recount is not going to change things...both counties have been over this district several times already. As for the 60/40 spilt, the earlier comment was based on the city precincts vs. outside the city precincts. Outside the city, Simmons won by an average of the 60/40. Inside Allentown, where straight party tickets were the main votes, Deely did. That was pretty clear from the comment made, but apparently it doesn't stop the hyper-partisans from making fun of the person who made it. Everyone take a chill - the race is OVER. Simmons won, Deely lost, it was close, but it's over.
Rich Cranium November 12, 2012 at 10:54 PM
It looks like maybe Deely actually has given it up. Look at his twitter account, on election night he tweeted about a great easy way work from home! Guess he is going to start doing that since he lost the election. https://twitter.com/deely4rep also available for view here: http://imgur.com/ik6uM
Tanya Bryant November 13, 2012 at 12:23 AM
Mary Anne the first responders are ones that went to New Jersey or New York to help with hurricane sandy so didn't know they would be away and filed an emergency absentee ballot. The other 4 voted absentee for the first time and didn't prove who they were. Interested observer is right Deely lost. Guess he doesn't care if he wastes his supporters money.
Gramma24 November 15, 2012 at 06:38 PM
Oh so right, Tanya, Deely is a LOSER, never should have run against St. Justin now should he? And those votes he did get, betcha they were bought and paid for by ACORN of some vicious cut throat Union!!!! Not wanted in lily white, wonderful Stepford, ur, Center Valley, right? If ANY vote is not counted, this is a travesty. Regardless how it falls in the end....to advocate Deely just giving in is to disenfranchise anyone who's vote may be in question, but I assume that doesn't bother you as long as St. Justin says where he is, which is where? Jamaica? I heard he was so confident that it was done he lit out on vacation........Let Jamaica have him......bet he can find himself a politician to be a sycophant for there as well.
Tanya Bryant November 15, 2012 at 07:06 PM
Gramma, Maybe you should comment on a current story in case you missed it every vote has been counted and Deely lost by 448 votes. Saw Justin having breakfast at the Coopersburg diner this morning don't know what the Jamaica comment is all about. Why are you people so bitter?
Gramma24 November 16, 2012 at 07:34 AM
Bitter, hah. This jerkwater corner of the armpit of Pennsyltucky deserves an ass kisser like Simmons. He is a 'yes man' to the far extreme religious right...and they can have him. Given the opportunity, I will remind Simmons that he does not represent me and I will picket his office every time he makes a boneheaded vote on 'demand' of his handlers. Oh, and at the diner, did you kiss his ring, you seem to be his staunch defender and ready willing and able to fight for him. Wipe his mouth for him? Haven NEVER liked the child, myself....when he ran as the teaparty darlin' agains Beyer and in the general election against Mike Horton before Deely. It's not a 'we people' (dig at Dems, you gotta get that in dontcha) are bitter and pull a straight ticket....I don't like the smarmy little weasel and wouldn't even if he was a democrat......
Fae Danner November 16, 2012 at 02:27 PM
Gramma24, I know I vented after Obama won; I was just as angry as you are about Deely having lost. But I can't change it and am trying to move on in my own way. I am a retired RN and, so, dealt with people who were in some kind of crisis that made them fearful and angry . I did my best to be gentle and understanding, which was helpful for them. I sincerely hope you move beyond the feelings that are creating such frustration within you. In the final analysis, anger does more harm to those who feel it and usually none toward those to whom it is directed. The election has created less dismay for me than the turn our country has taken by dividing itself into groups composed of gender, class, race, political beliefs, and ethnicity who seem to be working full time hating one another. My goodness, that is not who we should be! I guess I still believe in, "United we stand; divided we fall." By writing this, I've reminded myself that feelings come and go and we do ourselves a great favor by concentrating on the positive ones. If you believe that I am arriving at conclusions without knowing you, I would concede you are correct; but ask you to consider that perhaps, even though our opinions differ, it is very possible that we would actually like each other as individuals, were we to meet. You might even find Tanya to be a lovely person. God bless all of America and may our freedom of speech be used judiciously!
Gramma24 November 16, 2012 at 08:40 PM
Fae, I appreciate this. I do know a number of Republicans who I think highly of and then a few extremist Tea Partiers who I can only hope I can get as far away from as possible. I can appreciate that there will be differences of opinon, however, there are a few who know 'who' I am that have communicated threats not only to me, but to my grown children, based on my political affiliation. This really rankles me and I respond accordingly. Look, I can take, 'you're ugly and your mama dresses you funny' type of insults, but when my child IS a teacher and know how little is paid and how thankless the hours and the parents are it galls me to have to hear she is a 'taker'....well, if they can string two to three words together to make a sentence, they should THANK a teacher, not try to leave them desitute. And to communicate physical threats....that is beyond the pale. This local race, it was an ugly one, and I have had some pretty vile comments made regarding Mr. Deely (I've met him, nice guy) and by assoication, his voting block by people claiming they are godly people. I've stated before, I have met Simmons as well, and I'm not impressed, not by him, nor his entourage....but to threaten physical violence is too much.....and I would like to ask one question before I'm off her on this topic. If the shoe were on the other foot, wouldn't you expect Simmons to ask for a recount as well? (this is to all out there defending Simmons by slamming Deely)
Fae Danner November 16, 2012 at 10:10 PM
Gramma24, thank you for your explanation. To be truthful, if the race were close, to the point of there being a question who had won, of course I would support a recount. Fairness is my middle name ... so to speak. I sincerely wish you safety and peace in the future.
Joe Sommers November 24, 2012 at 03:13 PM
Gramma 24.....If you ever raised children, you should be so lucky to have s son or daughter turnout like Representative Simmons. Sorry pal, I kinow him well and you DONT know the person. In fact, your the drunk that attacks him at the Calvary church each election arent you ? Your issue is that He beat Karen Beyer, plain and simple. Beyer was ripe for the taking. Simmons fought his own party and listened to thousands of constituents to win the primary. He is a true leader with a pair of balls much bigger than yours . Someday he will be a Senator or Congressman.. I hope you live long enough to see it happen becuase it will.
Paula November 24, 2012 at 08:11 PM
I too know Rep.Simmons. He is an outstanding human being and we are very proud of him and look forward to his promising future as well.
Gramma24 November 24, 2012 at 08:48 PM
(chants in the background).....as the local repugs light candles to ST. JUSTIN. Hey, Joe.....I don't drink, and no, I didn't have jack to say to the little weasel at the polls, although US#3 IS my polling place. As far as my children are concerned Simmons isn't worthy to KISS THEIR A$$ES.....and no, I never supported Karen Beyer, but at least you knew where you stood with her......you didn't have to wonder who held the puppet strings unlike with Simmons. Keep praising him, worshipping him, kissing his ring....as I said earlier, I WILL remind him ever opportunity I get that he does not represent me and I will work again for the next person who wants to 'dethrone' the saint.
Gerry Kranz November 25, 2012 at 03:08 PM
I didn't think Deely had a gramma smart enough to use a newfangled computer. What an idiot.
Gerry Kranz November 25, 2012 at 03:12 PM
Will someone PLEASE take Gramma back to the home so she can start her meds again? She has been off them FAR too long.
Fae Danner November 25, 2012 at 05:42 PM
I am saddened to read language that is offensive and unverified being directed toward Justin Simmons and his family in such a scathing, personal manner. It is natural to be upset when one's candidate loses; however, acceptance, if not delight, has to be reached at some point. Certainly, one has the right to criticize policies that are objectionable and that criticism should be specific and stated in a civil manner. Avoiding coarse language will render one's arguments much more credible. As I have stated previously, I am quite satisfied with the effectiveness of Representative Simmons. The fact that he has followed through with his stated intention to deny himself the perks, to which he is entitled in his position, is rather rare and to be commended!
Gramma24 November 25, 2012 at 07:34 PM
I'd have to be on meds to even contemplate Simmons being anything but a tool of the far right. Apparently, comments on the Upper Saucon Patch are encouraged as long as they are republican in nature and not dismissive in any way to any of the demigods put forth by the GOP. I could use any language I liked apparently as long as it was directed towards Kevin Deely, Rick Dougherty or Barack Obama....but not that their sacred cows. All that is missing is the 'sacred writings of Bull Connor, axe wielding Lester Maddox or a human road block like Orval Faubus.
Joe Sommers November 26, 2012 at 01:36 PM
Gramma 24... . Cant wait till Rep Simmons gets relected for a third term and then decides to run for Senate or Congress. Your bastard children can come clean the restrooms at the statehouse !
