Resident Says Tax Collection is Too Slow

Southern Lehigh School District resident John Schubert said Berkheimer, which collects the district's emergency services tax, took too long to process a payment of $13 he had made.

A resident of the Southern Lehigh School District told the school board Monday that the firm hired to collect the district's emergency services tax was too slow to process a check payment he had made.

John Schubert, a former school board member, said Berkheimer took a month to deposit a quarterly payment of $13.

"I'm trying to keep my finances in order and a lot of things come to a grinding halt because of a lousy $13 bucks," he told the board. "If we can put a man on the moon...then Berkheimer can deposit my stinking check promptly."

The company touts itself as "Pennsylvania's most trusted tax administrator" on its website.

Schubert said he would also prefer that the $52 annual emergency services tax could be paid all at once, rather than in the four quarterly installments he said the state requires.
