Update: Simmons Beats Deely by 448 Votes

Incumbent Republican Justin Simmons edged out Democratic challenger Kevin Deely by 16 votes in Lehigh County in the 131st state House race. In Northampton County, Simmons won by 432 votes, the Simmons campaign said.

Incumbent state Rep. Justin Simmons defeated Democratic challenger Kevin Deely by 448 votes in the official count for the 131st state House seat, according to information provided by the Lehigh County election bureau and the Simmons campaign.

In Lehigh County, Simmons edged out Deely by 16 votes. Simmons had 13,014 votes to Deely's 12,998, according to Lehigh County election official Tim Benyo.

Northampton County's official results showed Simmons defeating Deely there by 432 votes, according to the Simmons campaign. Additional details were not immediately available.

In Lehigh County, Deely won by 239 votes in ballots cast at the voting machines. But when absentee and military ballots were added, Simmons edged ahead.

The race, called "one to watch" by Politics PA, was tight up to the end, with the unofficial count in Lehigh County as close as one vote. Despite calls to concede, Deely has yet to do so. His Facebook page asks supporters to help fund a recount if necessary. Deely leads the ballot box tally by 239 votes.

Benyo says the Lehigh County vote count will be certified when the rest of the ballots for other races are counted, which could still take a few weeks. "We have a holiday coming up, and about 1,670 more ballots to count," he said

After the results are certified, voters have five days to challenge the results. Benyo feels confident that the numbers will remain unchanged in Lehigh County.

"Both [Simmons and Deely] had representatives on hand while we were counting. If the results are challenged, we will just repeat the same process we just finished."

For some reason, this article and others focus on county by county. The 131st district includes both parts of Lehigh and Northampton counties. Who cares about the county by country or voting method by voting method? What is the total vote count for the total 131st district? Let's focus on the important numbers!

All in all, it is close. My hope is that Justin Simmons pays attention to just how close the election was and begins to moderate his legislative choices to more closely represent the voters wishes in this district, as opposed to playing "yes man" to Governor Corbett and special interests.

Simmons wins in a year with the Obama machine in full effect (in a district that has more registered Democrats then Republicans) and that is a sign that he needs to moderate? I say it means keep on doing what you are doing Justin!

I believe that I would request a recount if I were Mr. Deely. 16 is way too close.
Tanya Bryant November 15, 2012 at 03:18 AM
Patti, it's 448 not 16 read the article. What songs comes to mind? Na Na Na Na hey hey hey good bye! Time to close up the union shop Mr. Deely the voters shut you down. Bye bye can't say we will miss you.

co2? Do you mean NO2? (Nitrous Oxide i.e. whip its so you don't have to look it up) If Simmons moderates he loses his base which won him this election. I would be willing to bet 6000 voters in Allentown voted for Delly only because they voted straight democrat they had no idea who this moron was. Those that did voted against him big time. Nice win Justin congratulations. Hope Delly mans up and concedes.

Deely would have to grow a set to actually call Simmons and concede. Easier just to fade into the darkness. Enjoy North Carolina Kevin.

I wouldn't say the Obama machine is in full affect by any stretch. I would say, though, that Republicans should reexamine the realities of the present time and resist being influenced by the farthest to the right, as well as moderate their hard line no compromise mantras since Obama's 2008 election. Turns out no compromise is quite the compromising position these days when it comes to elections in a middle class squeezed economic climate. No compromise just doesn't work, neither does out spending the other party in elections. The bottom line for Justin Simmons is if he wants to stay in politics he should seriously consider a bit of forward thinking. I'm not sure how long he can hold out on name recognition and a "one of our own" voting base.

Yeah moderating worked very well for Karen Beyer didn't it?
Carol November 15, 2012 at 01:20 PM
Beyer lost in a primary where only the tea baggers turned out to vote for their puppet. She would easily win a general election. Lamb Chop can not say that.
Walter November 15, 2012 at 01:24 PM
Karen Beyer? Bwahahaha ...
John Reynard November 15, 2012 at 02:06 PM
Kevin can choose to pay for a recount or accept the results at this point. He is only using his rights under state law if he does pay for a recount. I don't see why this upsets everyone so much unless they're named Justin Simmons. Honestly even from Justin's perspective he's extremely likely to win a candidate-paid recount so I don't see why anyone would be upset if Deely paid for one.

what the hell happened to lehigh county? it's basically a blue county now. must be all the jersey and new york transplants. wonder if they'll ever realize there's a reason and political difference behind the lower taxes here.
Tanya Bryant November 15, 2012 at 03:15 PM
Who's Karen Beyer?
Crestor Januvia November 15, 2012 at 03:47 PM
Karen Beyer? BWHAHAAHAH. What a chuckle head.
Crestor Januvia November 15, 2012 at 03:51 PM
CO2.... obviously you are not getting enough O2..... we should moderate? We won! Should Obama moderate because he barely won? Wait till 2 years from now, when all the bums in Allentown won't even know it's election day. Simmons will win by 15% against whatever stiff the Demos put up. Maybe that dimwit Karen Beyer again?
Mary B November 15, 2012 at 07:54 PM
Crestor, Do you work, are you retired, or independently wealthy with nothing better to do? Clearly, the handle I use is too distracting for you. Again, I am a republican who is fed up with how the republicans are conducting themselves. To be more precise, who our government is conducting itself on both sides of the isle. There seem to be only a few people who contribute to these articles that, at least, sound like they "get it." Mostly, it is folks like you who just want to hear themselves blow. I hope Justin "gets it," I think he might. It's funny though, many like yourself are so on the republican defensive that you don't even hear what is being said - just take a swing.
Crestor Januvia November 15, 2012 at 09:04 PM
I "get it" far more than most people do.... which is why I know this country is headed to fiscal disaster, thanks to idiots who vote morons like Obama in... a Sol Alinsky radical who would like to knock the U.S. down to 2nd world status. I will, however, laugh my ass off at the "takers" of society, who vote for Obamination, get their butts reamed when all the handouts end, as we reach our coming fiscal disaster.... they brought in on, and will suffer the most.
Mary B November 16, 2012 at 02:11 AM
Handouts, funny....that is what I thought of of the auto industry, even more so for the too big to fail banks, and Wall Street. There seems to be an over abundance of takers across the spectrum from poverty through wealth along with everything in between. Our government bails everyone out. Let's face it, no democrat or republican would say no to the "too bigs." Bush #1 didn't, neither did #2, Clinton, Obama, or any other president that we vote in. It's a f&#@+<% mess, so I don't think you have to wait to LYAO - the disaster is alive and well.
