Coopersburg Man Involved in U. Macungie Fatal Crash

The crash occurred when a car driven by Steven Winkler, 23, of Macungie, crossed the raised center median on Route 100 in Upper Macunige Township, striking two tractor trailers.

A Coopersburg man was identified as one of two tractor trailer drivers involved in an accident Friday that proved fatal for a 23-year-old Macungie man.

Upper Macungie Township Police said Steven Winkler was driving a blue Subaru WRX sedan when his car crossed the Route 100 raised center median and hit the tractor trailers at the intersection of Industrial Boulevard at about 10:45 a.m.

The two trucks that were struck by Winkler's car were driven by George Betz, 70, of Coopersburg, and John Taylor, 60, of Rome, N.Y., police said.

Winkler was taken to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest, where he was pronounced dead, police also said.

Betz and Taylor were not injured.

Police said all three drivers were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident.

Route 100 was closed for approximately 90 minutes following the accident for an investigation.
