Mayo W. Lanning passed away at his home on Saturday, June 22, 2013.

Mayo W. Lanning, of Coopersburg, passed away at his home on Saturday, June 22, 2013. Mr. Lanning was born May 22, 1916 in Washington, N.J. He was the only child of Robert C. Lanning and Edith M. Wills. He graduated from Washington High School in 1935 and Lafayette College in 1941, with a degree in Mining Engineering. He married the late Gertrude M. Brown on Dec. 25, 1941. They had four children: Bonnie M. Stenroos of Coopersburg; Judith M., who died in Colorado in 1947; Robert M. of Springfield, Mo.; and Terry L. of Center Valley. He worked as a mining engineer for the New Jersey Zinc Company in New Jersey, Colorado and Pennsylvania for 25 years. He obtained a Professional Engineering license in 1954 and was certified as a Professional Land Surveyor in 1990. He obtained an MBA from Lehigh University in 1962. He resigned from the New Jersey Zinc Company in 1966 to attend graduate school at Lehigh University and was granted an MA in Economics in 1967. Mr. Lanning joined the faculty of Moravian College in 1967 and retired in 1981 as an Emeritus Professor of Economics and Business. Moravian retained him as a counselor for Continuing Studies Students until 1994. A "big band" man (and former orchestra leader) all his life, Mr. Lanning was a music teacher in his home for many years, teaching many students the fine art of playing saxophone, clarinet and trumpet. Survivors include 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Other survivors include daughters-in-law Rosemarie Lanning of Center Valley; Letitia Hess of Lafayette, Col.; Linda Lanning of Escondido, Calif.; Minuen Lanning of Springfield, Mo.; and son-in-law John Stenroos of Coopersburg. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, July 12 at 2 p.m. at Faith U.C.C., 5992 Rt. 378, Center Valley. In lieu of flowers, any desired contributions should be made to Betty Lou's Pantry of Coopersburg, Pa., or the Endowment Fund of Moravian College.
