Lehigh Valley is One of '100 Smartest Cities'

"The Lehigh Valley: Smarter than Cincinnati, not as smart as Topeka."

Ok, so maybe that's not the best slogan. 

But that's where we rank according to a new study that names the Allentown-Bethlehem-Easton metropolitan area as one of the 100 smartest areas in the country.

The study was performed by the San Francisco base company Lumosity, which measures human cognitive performance.

Lumosity had three million people play some of its brain-training games, measuring things like problem solving, memory, processing speed, flexibility and attention, according to the website Venture Beat.

It then took those results and ranked them by location.

Venture Beat notes that many of the communities on the list are in college towns. The number one and two spots on the list, for example, are held by Ithaca, N.Y. (home to Cornell and Ithaca College) and State College. 

The Lehigh Valley comes in at number 97, is of course home to numerous colleges and universities: Lehigh, Lafayette, Cedar Crest, Muhlenberg, Moravian, DeSales, as well as Penn State's satellite campus and two community colleges.

“Neuroscience research has found that those who are engaged in learning and cognitively stimulating activities throughout the lifetime build up a ‘cognitive reserve’ that helps maintain and improve cognitive performance," Lumosity's Daniel Sterberg said, quoted on Venture Beat.
