Community Update

Hi !

So I guess it
is time I finally started one for so many reasons as you will see.

But first we
need “ audience “ analysis –

            “ You “ need to get to know ” me “

            “ I “ need to get to know”  you “

So we can
better communicate & understand each other.

I do not
expect you to agree with me, but rather to present other viewpoints, disagree,
challenge, provide new & different information, etc. to keep me sharp &
thinking about many very complex matters that are so important today.

As long as
you are well informed of the”  facts, “
whatever they are, that is fine.

That is what
scientists like me deal with – “ the facts “ - from experimentation &
developing theories.

But of course
today we need “ fact checkers “ & “ fact checkers on the fact checkers ! “

But it is the
“ interpretation “ of the facts where many valid differences of opinions can
develop of course.

As the
sayings goes –

            When you are young you “ know “ all
the answers

            But as you get older, you “ hope you
know “ more of the questions !

            We do not have to see eye to eye to
walk down the same path !

            We agree to respectfully disagree

            The old Caterpillar heavy machinery
slogan –

                        No simple answers

                        Only

                        Intelligent choices

Of course all
with many very serious “ tradeoffs “ – some not reversible once picked !

One of my
fellow academic colleagues long ago said –

            “ You do not have to eat the whole
can of garbage to know it is garbage ! “

            So when grading student papers, he
would draw the red line – put an “ F “ grade on it and move on to the next student
paper.

            He is now a fairly well known men’s
fashion writer in New York City [NYC] – guess he finally read enough “
garbage  “ to make a big career change.

            Also, I like to keep it “ light “
since life is too important to take some things too seriously !

            In addition, I like “ stories “ –
they can communicate better than just words many times.

            They can give you some of the “
flavor “ of LMT past and present.  You
can provide the “ flavor “ for the future, especially the many new people in
LMT in the past few years for so many reasons.

            So as one of the disc / internet jockeys
[DJ’s / IJ’s] on one of the many internet radio stations I listen too ends his
show with –

            “ Hope you liked what you heard
& heard what you liked ! “

So I say –

            “ Hope you like what you read on my
blog & read what you like ! “

Therefore, I
will give you some very brief info on me and would “ relish “ any on you that
you would like to share.

But I will
put a lot more in a “ second “ blog post, so we can concentrate on the

 “ present “and not the past.

“ Always just
ask if you need more info “ – I have nothing to hide, but many I have dealt
with sure do !

At 70 + just
careers [yes that is plural !] and a life [you only get one !] “ well beyond my
wildest dreams ! “  So many great stories
to tell and incredible great people involved. 
So many to thank so much for all they did for me to make it happen.

Statistics
say only about 5 – 10 years left, only some good !

Genetics are
good since some of my relatives lived into their 80’s !

Still in good
health but usual aging issues and happiest have even been.

Plenty of
local R & R as required of course !

But as the
saying goes – “ You do not even buy green bananas any more ! “

Formally
retired for about past 10 years, mostly concentrating on our 9 + wooded &
isolated acres in LMT, Lehigh Country property that we let go for over 20 years
because of such careers & lives.  But
“ mailing address “ is East Greenville, Montgomery County.

In addition,
continuing my decades of science, technology & society [STS] research some
sponsored and funded even by the National Science Foundation [NSF].

Simply &
briefly, they got a group of us gray haired, well established, published,
tenured, etc. academics together for many training sessions about how to best
understand & manage STS issues for the general public.  They anticipated over twenty [20] years ago
what we would be going thru even globally today.  They may be getting us back together again
for updates.

Not only did
these training sessions change my careers so dramatically, but also my

life !

Will be
starting to publish a lot of it in many of the standard ways besides getting on
the speaking circuit, mostly thru webinars to keep travel and costs down.

Hundreds of
PowerPoint presentations all ready to go + hundreds in draft form on a great
variety of diverse topics to appeal to a wide range of audiences.

Naturally, many
more traditional forms of publication - over six [6] books, numerous articles,
etc. all ready to go.

“ BTW “ as
the younger generation “ texts “ for “ by the way, I am “ free “ – one of those
few nice four [4] letter words beginning even with the letter “ F “ !

Part of my
small “ payback “ to society for all invested in me by so many – some by NSF
your tax dollars at work !

However, I
will be filing for a 501C3 in case anyone would like to donate to this research
for a tax deduction.

LMT

Vote in all
elections unless a couple I was away for. 
Nice that there are now absentee ballots available.

Always
registered as an “ independent “ like my parents so can best vote for the most
qualified person for the position..

So cannot
vote in primaries like the last one in LMT that was such a surprise..

Complimented
new person in charge of LMT elections – out in less than 15 minutes and the
place was packed at 8 am !  Very well
done & organized !

On Southern
Lehigh Library Board for many years, secretary & head.  We helped to build some of the second one on
top of Beverly Hills.  Now new one over
near Center Valley 50 years later & still so successful,  important & relevant in so many ways to
not only LMT but many other local areas.

FYI – how it
started was two [2] women in LMT who realized the children did not have books
to read and the nearest other libraries were miles away.  So they simply started to collect books to
make them available to them.

LMT
historical group probably has much more info.

But the
intense demands of my careers would not allow me to be more active in LMT for
many reasons.

But as you
know my wife has been on the LMT Planning Commission [LMT PC} since the 1970’s
and had to even sue,  at our own personal
expense,  to get back on when she was
illegally removed by some new elected officials –

            “Lets see, to prepare for the LMT PC
tonight – papers / documents, cell phone, writing materials & “ court order
! “ “

            Her minutes go to court !  Just do a deep Google search on her and even
me – you may be surprised what you find. 
Do it on others also in LMT of course.

So I do not
attend LMT meetings since someone has to stay home to take care of things since
she is so involved with LMT in so many ways.

            Then the LMT elected official who
tried to kill someone by running over that person with a tractor – but got off
since the judge ruled you have to do it “ more than once “ for it to be prosecuted.  But “ behind the scenes “ – that person is
not involved with LMT any longer !

            Also, decades ago in much simpler
times, when township meetings got very heated and tempers were on edge, Lloyd
Ohl,  the first LMT police officer and
chief, would  just show up and stand
quietly in the back – tall, thin & perfectly dressed in  his LMT police uniform.

            They all knew him  and he knew them all so well, with much they
did not  want known publically.  So things were suddenly much more civil !

            When he finally retired,  since he probably knew LMT needed a lot more
than just him, the Morning Call did a nice article on him.  Search their archives to find it.

            He predicted who the murderer was of
the “ first “ murder in LMT – again he knew people so well.  Now we have a “ second “ murder  – largest marijuana field in Lehigh County –
just a block from where we live !

            But on a more humorous note, some
teenagers were throwing eggs from a field  at cars on Limeport Pike.  Lloyd had a farmer spread manure on the field
to fertilize it.  Suddenly the egg throwing
stopped.  Wonder why ?
