Christian Frederick Martin was the son of a cabinetmaker in Saxony, and moved to the United States in 1833, the Met said in a statement about the exhibit. Martin eventually settled in Nazareth, and it was there that he produced his legendary guitars that the Met said would be the basis for all American guitars to come.

The exhibit opened Jan. 14 and will run nearly all year, to Dec. 7. Admission to the exhibit is included with a museum ticket. Tickets are $25 for adults; $17 for seniors over 65; and $12 for students. Click here for additional travel information and to purchase tickets.
