Local Dog's Legacy Lives on as Solehi's Top Dog

Beautiful Black Lab Mazey May passed away this summer, but her smile lives on.

The votes are in, and our own Mazey May has won top dog for Southern Lehigh.

Mazey's owner, known online as Slyfox, nominated her at a particularly difficult time for Mazey.

"Mazey May just passed away," wrote Slyfox in the comments.

After being notified about Mazey May's win, this is what her owner had to say:

Little Miss Mazey May was a special dog – Loving, caring and devoted to us to a fault. Black Labrador born on about 1/1/1999 and adopted on 12/15/1999. Beginner obedience classes and 2 advanced classes. She became the best dog there and won all the prizes. Loved to swim in Lake Nockamixon even though she splashed around like a little goof ball, never did learn how to “glide” through the water. We installed an “Invisible Fence” around our property and within 4 days she knew her boundaries. She loved to run and play every day. She swam in her little kiddie pools we bought her. She loved to paw at her solid ball in the water & try to have it come up to her rather than duck her head under the water. Her little water bucket that was outside for her to drink from, she would stick her front paws in and splash away to get her chest wet. She woke me every day at 4 am to go to work but on the weekends she woke up her “daddy”. How she knew that I don’t know.

We had to build a solid picket fence around our vegetable garden for she would sneak in and steal – cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans, cabbages,  strawberries and green peppers. She loved also to be in the kitchen with Mommy & Mommy shared with her – celery, carrots, cheese, organic beef, organic chicken, hard- boiled egg whites, peanut butter, crunchy cereal, cool whip, reddi whip from the can, toast with no butter, hot dogs, peanuts, lettuce, peas, radishes, cucumbers, tomatoes, green beans, strawberries (her favorite), organic vanilla ice cream and of course her organic dog treats.

Commands she knew without hesitation and obeyed every single time we asked her to do these things – come, sit, stay, wait, bark, friends?, down, off, leave it, heel, hurry, okay, no, get back, look here, get daddy, get mommy, go see who’s at the door, roll over, get your bone, get your toy, where’s your cubie?,  wake up daddy/mommy, listen (she’d close her mouth, hold her breath & tilt her head to listen), truck, up, here and many others I cannot remember at the moment.

She was always welcome at the Fountain Hill Cedarbrook Annex. She brought a smile and laughter to many of the residents there. They will miss her.

She was in perfect health, perfect  coat, perfect weight, no arthritis, no bone problems. Nothing. Ate the best food, organic fresh food, vitamins, oils for her coat, bath every week, brushed her teeth and trimmed her nails weekly. She love us so as we love her. We did everything that we know was the best for her. Nothing was spared for this girl.

In 2009 she was diagnosed with Spontaneous Pneumothorax and the Univ. of Pa. Ryan Hospital had to remove ½ of her lung. She was in dire need of help. We never knew what caused that for she never left our property and never was in an accident. She had a hole in her lung and it was leaking air under her skin. She survived and that gave us another precious 3 years. If only there was more.

One week she was fine – the next week she died. Spinal cancer – Matthew J Ryan Hosp in Phila did an MRI and there was nothing we could do. It broke our hearts. It took the light away from our home – it was so dark. Seemed a bad, sad place to be for we have no family nor do we have kids so Mazey was our bright spot. Our only spot. She trusted her Mommy. She looked to me for comfort, love, kisses and help when she needed it. She was always there for us. Always.

From Mazey May's smiling photo to the kindness in her eyes, you can see why this beautiful Black Labrador is Southern Lehigh's top dog.

Congrats Mazey May! You live on as Southern Lehigh's top dog!
