State Rep. Justin Simmons—who represents the Southern Lehigh area in the state legislature—recently presented Southern Lehigh Public Library director Lynnette Saeger and board of directors members with a citation recognizing the library's 50th anniversary.

The library—which was founded in 1963—has celebrated its golden anniversary with a wide variety of events throughout the year.

The citation notes that the library began its life as the Lower Milford Library Association, which was founded by 12 women in 1963 "in a basement with donated books."

The library later occupied a building on Beverly Hills Road for more than 30 years (1971 to 2004), moving to its present location on Preston Lane in Upper Saucon Township in 2004.

"Throughout its history, the Southern Lehigh Public Library has grown and flourished due to strong visionary leadership, a deep belief in the power of the written word and an environment which promotes education, entertainment and achievement for each citizen in the community," the Dec. 9 citation says.

Residents of Coopersburg, Lower Milford Township and Upper Saucon Township are served by the library.
