Youth Track and Field Athletes Return with Medals

Pennsylvanias annual Olympics, the Keystone State Games, opened in youth track and field on Friday July 18 and concluded in the Open, and then the Masters division on Sunday. Officials at Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, PA, awarded medals in 20 events in both boys and girls divisions in 6 different age groups.

In the youth division, top local finishers (pictured L-R) included: Jessica Merena, 12, of Pennsburg, Montgomery County, girls 11-12 200 meter dash (5th 33.85), 6lb shot put (5th 3.90m) and high jump (3rd 1.05m); Stephen Luisser, 6, of Bethlehem, boys 8-and-Under 800 meter run (PR 4:10), 2kg shot put (3rd 2.41m) and 300g mini javelin (1st 9.46m); Julia Luisser, 12, high jump (1st PR 1.25m), 400g mini javelin (2nd 19.2m) and 1kg discus (1st 11.7m); and, Nathan Merena, 7, 100 meter dash (8th 18.05, prelims 17.94), shot put (2nd 3.07m) and long jump (2nd PR 2.95m).

Stephen and his sister compete for Ambergris Track Club of Bethlehem. Nathan and his sister compete for Lickity-Split Athletics (LSA) Cougars, a USA Track and Field (USATF) club for area youth ages 4 to 18. LSA outdoor practices were held twice weekly at Upper Perkiomen Middle School, East Greenville, PA. Tuesday night meets were held in Fort Washington, PA.
