Headline Harrisburg

The 2013-14 Pennsylvania Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program awards have been announced. The funding can be used to build or renovate a facility, buy or fix equipment, training or debt reduction. Emergency responders perform a vital service in our communities. I am pleased we are able to provide this additional financial support. 

The following emergency service providers in the 131st Legislative District received grants, which are generated from statewide slot machine proceeds: 

Lehigh County 
   •Lower Milford Township Fire Company 1 – $13,619.31.   
   •Upper Milford Western District Fire Company – $12,323.21.   
   •Upper Saucon Ambulance Corps – $7,091.40.   
   •Upper Saucon Township Volunteer Fire Department No. 1 - $13,619.31.   
   •Coopersburg Fire Company No. 1 – $13,458.11.   
   •Eastern Salisbury Fire Ambulance and Rescue Company – $13,619.31.     
Montgomery County 
   •East Greenville Fire Company No. 1 – $12,315.11.  
   •Pennsburg Fire Company No. 1 – $13,619.31.   
   •Red Hill Fire Company – $13,619.31.     
Northampton County 
   •Se-Wy-Co Fire Company (Bethlehem) – $27,239.43.

Legislation was introduced this week that would prevent non-compliant Megan’s Law sex offenders from receiving welfare benefits in Pennsylvania. House Bill 1951 would prevent taxpayer dollars from being given to sex offenders who do not meet the registration and other requirements outlined in Megan’s Law. The measure now goes to the House Health Committee for consideration. 
  
PennDOT is accepting applications for 2014 summer employment for college students. To qualify, candidates must be 18 years of age and enrolled in college for the fall 2014 semester. The deadline to apply is Feb. 21Apply here under the “student summer employment” category
