Budget hearings conclude next week as the House Appropriations Committee continues to scrutinize Gov. Tom Corbett’s proposed spending plan for the 2014-15 fiscal year. Negotiations will then get underway with the governor’s office and Senate leaders with the goal of having a final budget in place before the June 30 deadline.

Earlier this month, for the first time, we offered free assistance to area veterans at my district office in Coopersburg and a number of vets took advantage of the opportunity. An American Legion service officer is available on the first Friday of the month from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to answer questions about veterans benefits and help file claims. Pennsylvania’s 511PA traveler information system is now offering motorists better access to traffic information with a new and improved website, as well as better phone and personal-alert systems. The redesigned website provides free, 24-hour travel information on 40,000 miles of state roads plus the Pennsylvania Turnpike, including access to 680 traffic cameras. Learn more here 511PA.com.
  
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is currently accepting applications for summer employment from college students interested in filling toll, maintenance and clerical positions.

All applications must be submitted online here. When completing the application, applicants should select SUMMER WORK under the “user information” tab and SUMMER POSITIONS DESIRED under the “interested positions” tab. Copies of online applications should be sent to my Harrisburg office by Monday, March 24.
