Community Corner

Headline Harrisburg

The House will have an important legislative agenda for the new year with proposals dedicated to improving Pennsylvania’s budgetary and economic climates. We plan to finish our work on legislation that enhances child protection and safety, building on the accomplishments made in 2013. The push to reform the Commonwealth’s public pension systems will continue in 2014. We also expect to resume efforts to bring consumer convenience to the purchase of wine and spirits. I am looking forward to working hard on these issues and other important legislation that comes before us during the coming months.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Crisis Grant Program opened this week. LIHEAP has funding available for eligible residents who are in an emergency situation and about to lose their heat. Assistance is available 24 hours a day. If you, or someone you know, are in need of such help, please contact your county assistance office.

With frigid temperatures in the forecast, be sure to protect yourself from the cold. Stay warm at home by setting the thermostat to no less than 65 degrees, wearing layers of cotton clothing, eating a balanced diet, drinking warm drinks like coffee or cocoa and avoiding alcohol.

If going outdoors is necessary, limit time outside to up to 30 minutes if the wind chill drops to 10 degrees or less; wear layers of clothing topped by a water resistant outer layer; and wear a hat, scarf and mittens.

Information on dealing with cold weather health conditions is available here.
