Westboro Baptist Targets 4 Lehigh Valley Churches

The controversial anti-gay group Westboro Baptist Church says it is planning to protest at four Allentown area churches on January 20

Westboro Baptist Church says it is planning to stage protests at four Lehigh Valley churches including the Cathedral of St. Catharine of Siena in Allentown on Sunday, according to a press release posted on the group's website.

South Whitehall police Lt. John Christman, aware of the planned Westboro pickets, said, "Often they don't show. We're hoping that occurs."

He and township Manager Jon Hammer met with the pastors at the targeted churches in South Whitehall about the matter on Tuesday.

Do you support the online petition to designate Westboro Baptist a hate group?

If Westboro does picket, authorities will "let them do what they do," he said. "Let them have their protest." However police would need to take appropriate action if they block roadways, he said.

Christman said the police department will likely have extra patrol cars and undercover officers on duty. He said he heard counter protests may be planned.

The press release says the protests will target "whorehouses masquerading as churches" and lists the following times and locations:

  • 8:30 to 9 a.m.: St Paul's Anglican, 2510 Livingston Street
  • 9:05 to 9:30 a.m.: Asbury Church, 1533 Springhouse Road
  • 9:50 to 10 a.m.: Cathedral of St. Catharine, 210 N. 18th Street
  • 10:30 to 11 a.m.: First Baptist Church, 1808 N. 19th Street

First Baptist Church secretary Kim Nemeth said she first learned about the planned protest from police on Tuesday and did research on the group. She said there's "a little ill at ease" because the church officials don't want church-goers to feel inhibited as they come to worship on Sunday.

When asked why First Baptist may have been targeted, Pastor Chuck Reed said, "We're an old Baptist church and I think they assume we're a liberal church."

But, he said, "We're conservative evangelical. We're not liberal at all."

He said Westboro seemed to hit four corners of theology in the churches they are targeting on Sunday -- Baptist, Methodist, Catholic and Anglican.

He said First Baptist Church does not support Westboro's views but is not worried about their visit. "We've been praying for them," Reed said.

"We're a Biblically driven, local evangelical church...and we just love people. We worship God as a community."

Matthew Kerr, spokesman for the Diocese of Allentown, told Patch he's aware of the press release but offered no further comment.

Kansas-based Westboro is an independent Baptist church known for its extreme opposition to homosexuality and its protests at military funerals.

An online petition to classify Westboro as a hate group and revoke its federal tax-exempt status has gained close to 74,000 signatures.

Why don't folks go and protest at the Westboro Baptist Church so these knuckleheads can feel what it's like? Oh, I forgot. Probably because the overwhelming majority of Americans are not intolerant narcissists. I am all for free speech so if any of them do show, I think they should be allowed to stand around with their signs. But it's about time they had to endure what they've been dishing out, especially to the families of our troops. They might stop their antics if they had to put up with protests outside of the funeral of one of their loved ones.

The Bible should be banned!

Here are several really loving excerpts from the Torah; the first five books of the Old Testament in the bible -- perhaps read to the congregation on Friday night at a synagogue or a Sunday morning church in the meadow.

1. Kill any friends or family that worship a god that is different than your own. Deuteronomy 13:6-10
2. Kill all the inhabitants of any city where you find people that worship differently than you. Deuteronomy 13:12-16
3. Kill everyone who has religious views that are different than your own. Deuteronomy 17:2-7.

Rabbinical / Priestly rules:
Leviticus 21:17-18 … “No one who is blind or lame or has a defect or any blemish may approach to offer the bread of his God.”
Leviticus 18:22 … “You are not to go to bed with a man as with a woman; it is an abomination ….”

Rabbis; the pope and churches fully aware that Leviticus 18:22 applies to rabbis and priests … refuse to remove this stigma maliciously persecuting gays. Kids are being bullied into suicide …!

well done. seeing these holy statements sometimes make believers, whom by the way never ever read the bible most likely, get shocked and refuse the statements. i would say 9.9 out 10 of people never actually picked the book up and read any page of it. Fox News and their hosts practice this way.

Being black, left-handed or being gay is just as natural. It is a sometimes rare occurrence to fall in Love and to hold that person in your heart and be loved in return ... it is something that should be celebrated! If it’s between two guys or two girls -- all the better. It takes even more courage to defend that LOVE!

I am the son of a catholic father who never went to church and a protestant mother who took us to church and Sunday school. Onward christian soldiers; I think not. Such absolute drivel. To be manipulated by a santa claus; an easter bunny and worst of all a bogus cross?

It’s now time to shut down the synagogues and churches with the torah & bibles with Leviticus 18:22 and Deuteronomy 13:12-16. To see the religious lunatics manipulate government and peoples’ lives -- is shameful.

Many theologians state quite correctly that the birth; crucifixion; resurrection and other elements of christianity actually didn’t even happen! Churches are committing hate crimes and more succinctly a violent criminal offence against a federally protected minority namely the gay community. It is actually a bigger moment in history … gays standing up for equality ... the realization that there is something far more evil at work -- hateful religion which should be discharged from society – period.

Grant - You're using the same freedom as these people from Kansas to voice your hatred for a group that doesn't think like you. I don't see much difference between your post and this church group's signs. Not all Christians hate gays and not all gays hate Christians.
Your theology is quite odd, focusing only on a few Old Testament verses, taken out of context, and paraphrased to suit you. Most theologians? Maybe a few with an agenda.
I looked at your songs on ITunes - the titles are disgusting to me, yet I'll stand up for your right to publish them, as I'll do for these Kansas people.
Keep the anger in check.

How amazing it would be if all four congregations worshipped that day in each of the 4 churches. That and some human shields would send a message of what love and acceptance look like to the mentally deranged members of the WBC, as they apparently have not an ounce of compassion in their shrunken hearts. Cuckoos!

Look at all this intolerance. Ban the Bible? Because you are too lazy to read the words, and too rebellious to do your duty? God's arm is not shortened by rebels. God has opened his armory and he has brought forth the weapons of HIS indignation and this nation is being undone. You don't even see the hand coming down on with with the slaughter weapon tucked inside that will completely and finally dispatch this nation to hell, for real. You do however see the weapons that are making so many of your cities desolate. Hurricane Sandy is a wonderful work of God. Sandy Hook Elementary stands in the shoes of ALL the schools of Doomed america, where you put the children in the chairs and teach them to despise God and to disobey and rebel against his commandments. BAD PLAN! God promised such a nation as this that for that mischief, you could bring those children into this world, but you would do that for the murderer, you could bring them up, but he would kill them. God sent the shooter to Newtown, and to ANYtown, and to MANYtowns in USA, and he is not even getting warmed up. WOE to this nation for your disobedience. PA stands out in the nation, because you spawned Albert Snyder and stood by while he, and his military attorneys put Westboro on trial. It was against the laws of the land, the organic law of the nation. Where was your voice of opposition? For all this, prepare to meet your God rebels.

Ms. Shirley,

I agree that people should read God's word before they pass any judgments, but based on your comments, I can't help but wonder if you have. I am a conservative and do believe that God intended marriage to be between men and women, however, I do NOT believe that your congregation is acting in a way at all in-tune with scripture.

In Matthew 8:1-11, the Bible tells a story of a woman caught in adultery. The woman was to be killed for her sin, but Jesus was the one who stopped her death. He did not hold signs proclaiming her sins, nor did he shout from the mountaintops of her adultery. In fact HIS sign made those who were ready to throw the stones turn away. He was the only one on the planet with the right to condemn this woman, as he was (and still is) the holy and perfect son of God sinless in every way (Giving him more right to judge the sinner than all of your church members combined might I add). YET his words to her were "Go now and leave your life of sin." Short, sweet, and to the point. He saw that he lifestyle was wrong, and did not encourage it, but he gave her grace and a second chance. Jesus is human perfection, the example for Christians in every area of life.

Here is a verse for you to ponder a bit...
"Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love." 1 John 4:8

A firm believer in the love and grace of Christ who worships at First Baptist Church

@Shirley. So, God sent the shooter to slaughter a bunch of innocent children? Yeah, finding that one a bit of a stretch to put it mildly! Also, how dare you preach intolerance to some of the other commenters! YOU BAPTISTS at WBC, are being the intolerant ones by protesting against those churches. You are entitled to your opinions and beliefs, but you can't find a better outlet for your opinions? Are they bothering or hurting you in any way? Leave all of those folks alone! AND, your comment(s) about GOD sending the shooter are still bothering me the more I read your statement. "He's just getting warmed up"? Are you kidding me? Yes, we are all entitled to our "freedom of speech", but your comment sounds like a threat to me. I believe in a loving GOD and a tolerant, peaceful GOD, who I'm sure is not sitting back saying "that'll show them...I'm just getting warmed up". YOU really sound like a phanatic! Tell me this...if "God sent a shooter to your child's school and they were hurt or (sadly) killed, would you say, oh well, that's what he wanted? I would think not!

Religion and the churches should now be exposed as a bigoted structure that gets away with hate mongering. It is a criminal offence to cause harm onto others physically or with written items; torahs – old testament/new testament bibles have been getting away with corruption and cultism based on bogus hocus pocus.

There is no scientific evidence to prove any of the cross related bogus elements of christianity and other religions. Our early human ancestors; on this earth … go back more than 6 million years … 5,996,000 years before the Greeks, Romans and the Jews. Christianity is basically a 2013 year old fictional cult. In the year 300 AD when Emperor Constantine, who to some was the first pope; went on to fabricate & market Christianity! Maybe better yet people need to use common sense and know that when these were all written the world was a different place. Acceptance and tolerance are expected in today's age where it wasn't way back then. We can't ban these kind of things, but what we can do is educate people that are closed minded and think that spewing hate and meanness at others will get them into heaven. I'm pretty sure whatever religion you are and whatever God you pray too it's not okay to hate others and spew hatred like this group is doing. This group is going to get the opposite end result than what they THINK they will get then their calling day comes.

This bogus religious filth should be banned. It exists as a tax exempt structure which discriminates against human rights. Perhaps religious establishments have pushed too far from San Francisco to Canada -- and it may backfire to such a degree that the churches should be shut down!

Grant, why are you using this article about Westboro as a pulpit for your views? Isn't there a more well-suited venue? This article isn't about whether any church or religion in general is "accurate" or fallacy. This article is about Westboro doing some picketing in Bethlehem. Don't be a troll. Focus where your battles are best fought.

Westboro seems to be equally filled with hate as you are, albeit for different purposes. Perhaps you should both join forces and picket together? Make yourselves a Hate Brigade? One side: pro-gay, the other side: anti-gay ... united together in hate for everyone you both don't agree with. Because that will surely make things better.

Or how about you both just learn to get along with others, even if you don't agree with them? Your rants and protests and books are wasting everyone's time, wasting resources, hurting people, and making the world an even uglier place. And I don't think that's what God or The Big Bang would want either of you to do.

My father was an atheist like you. We were very close and would have debates about the reality of God.He was a B17 bomber pilot during the second World War. He flew 60 missions, had several crew members killed and brought two planes back that could only be used for spare parts. I believe this affected his outlook on God.He died quite suddenly at age 45. The night he died he appeared to me with tears in his eyes and holding a Bible out to me.I was 13 at the time and I know he was telling me that I was right and wanted to make sure I knew that.

You are right to enjoy to say enjoy the life you have. I feel sorry for you to miss the appreciation of the good things God has provided for us. If you don't believe in him why do you rail against him so ?

Dear President Obama:

Christianity is a fantasy; which turned out to be one of the most hateful & evil concoctions ever perpetrated on the world.

Mr Grant,

It sounds like you have been wildly mistreated by the church at some point in time for your sexuality, for which I apologize. It is wrong for the church to have ostracized you.

I don't believe however, that you are entirely right in what you are saying. Your hatred is clouding your view of the facts. This "hocus pocus" book is more historically accurate than all of the works of Socrates, there is more recent and more of the historical documents supporting the Old Testament than for the works of Socrates. Yet do you question his work? You never heard him say those things, but do you question their validity? No. People don't.

You say that there is no way that Jesus rose from the dead, but there are over 500 eyewitness accounts that have claimed to see him after the historically documented crucifixion. All but ONE of Jesus's followers died a martyr's death because they proclaimed his resurrection. Would 11+ people die a torturous death for a hoax?

I can respect your not choosing to follow the religion I believe in. BUT I cannot respect your insulting things that you do not understand. You cannot claim that Jesus never existed because of history, BUT you CAN decide and defend whether or not he was the son of God he claimed to be. That is what makes you an atheist. To claim he never existed is merely ignorance.

Just thought I'd give you some historical insight...

You obviously missed my second comment on your hypocrisy at chatising all religion because they do not agree with what you believe

Hang on! Aren't you trying to force your beliefs on me right now? And isn't that what you are trying to fight against.

There were over 500 eyewitnesses. You are going to say they were ALL on strong hashish? AND many of whom were willing to DIE for this high dream? Now what sounds more far fetched?

Your issue with religion is that you see that it contradicts what you believe. That is a completely separate issue all together than whether or not Jesus existed.

I am a firm Bible-Believing Christian, and I agree with you there are problems within churches, however the point of Christianity does not lie in the followers it lies in the example. We don't claim that we are perfect, we only claim that Jesus was. That is a difference you have not distinguished quite yet.

What did Jesus do after his resurrection? Did he become a great emperor and live for many years again in his born again state or did he just appear on a street corner in front of 500 and say …? ”See ya later folks … I got things to do and places to go … just remember ya saw me and that I am the son of god and ya all can do the same. See ya later buddy!”
Sounds like Jesus -- was a copycat preacher! I recall the story of Simon bragging he was the messiah – about 78 miles away from where Jesus lived and Jesus’ cousin John the Baptist … telling him all about Simon.

Most people apparently assume that the New Testament expresses strong opposition to homosexuality, but this simply is not the case. The six propositions that follow, considered cumulatively, lead to the conclusion that the New Testament does not provide any direct guidance for understanding and making judgments about homosexuality in the modern world.

Proposition 1: Strictly speaking, the New Testament says nothing at all about homosexuality.
There is not a single Greek word or phrase in the entire New Testament that should be translated into English as “homosexual” or “homosexuality.” In fact, the very notion of “homosexuality”—like that of “heterosexuality,” “bisexuality,” and even “sexual orientation”—is essentially a modern concept that would simply have been unintelligible to the New Testament writers. The word “homosexuality” came into use only in the latter part of the nineteenth century, and, as New Testament scholar Victor Paul Furnish notes, it and related terms “presume an understanding of human sexuality that was possible only with the advent of modern psychological and sociological analysis.” In other words, “The ancient writers . . . were operating without the vaguest conception of what we have learned to call ‘sexual orientation’.”1 (In the rest of this article I shall use the terms “homosexual” and “homosexuality” strictly for the sake of convenience.)

Grant MacDonald

In short, there is nothing in the New Testament that tells us directly whether homosexuality per se is a good thing or a bad thing or simply a fact of life.
To be sure, when we consider its overall message, the New Testament may provide some indirect guidance regarding homosexuality. Indeed, it may well be the case that a twenty-first century “Paul” would revise Galatians 3:27–28 to read as follows:

For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is not male and female, there is neither homosexual nor heterosexual; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

Get over yourself Grant. You will never get everyone to accept you, just as you don't accept me as a Christian. Big deal...get over it! Not everyone is going to agree with your point of view no matter how ugly and nasty you get. I have a lot of assumptions made about me because I am Catholic and, God forbid, a Republican. I could care less what people think of me when they don't even know me. Obviously you feel shunned by your church. Some of us have wonderful experiences with our churches. I have also had horrible experiences. I am mature to realize that churches are made up of flawed human beings. That doesn't mean the teachings are flawed. I have been lucky enough to have God show His presence to me when I was at my lowest. Why don't you shut the world out for a minute and just try a prayer to God. Let Him know you don't believe, but ask Him to show Himself to you in your life. You might be surprised. Open your heart just a little and make room for God. You might not be filled with so much hate and nastiness.

Grant MacDonald

9:43 am on Saturday, January 19, 2013

Proposition 2: At most, there are only three passages in the entire New Testament that refer to what we today would call homosexual activity.
None of the four gospels mentions the subject. This means that, so far as we know, Jesus never spoke about homosexuality, and we simply have no way of determining what his attitude toward it might have been. Moreover, there is nothing about homosexuality in the Book of Acts, in Hebrews, in Revelation, or in the letters attributed to James, Peter, John, and Jude. Further, homosexuality is not mentioned in ten of the thirteen letters attributed to Paul. It is only in Romans 1:26–27, 1 Corinthians 6:9–10, and 1 Timothy 1:8–11 that there may be references to homosexuality.2 The paucity of references to homosexuality in the New Testament suggests that it was not a matter of major concern either for Jesus or for the early Christian movement.

My understanding, as a Catholic, is that being homosexual is not a sin. The sin is if you act on it. Even if you do, that is between you and God. Who is to say that it is a worse sin than adultery or any other sin that I commit. Grant, your choices in life are between you and God. God is loving. I am sorry that you have had so much ugliness hurled at you in the name of God, but that doesn't excuse you hurling your ugliness at us. I have had proof of God in my life. I was at the point of wanting my life to end, I cried out to God. Without getting specific, He answered my prayer. The last 4 years have been a struggle, but it's a lot easier with God by my side. God fills me in. I try to live my life as best I can. I fail often, but I know that no matter what, God loves me and is there for me. I feel so blessed to know that. Nothing else or no one else matters. It's all about me and God. It is such a gift. I will pray for you.

Being black, left-handed or being gay is just as natural. It is a sometimes rare occurrence to fall in Love and to hold that person in your heart and be loved in return ... it is something that should be celebrated! If it’s between two guys or two girls -- all the better. It takes even more courage to defend that LOVE ....

I am the son of a catholic father who never went to church and a protestant mother who took us to church and Sunday school. Onward christian soldiers; I think not. Such absolute drivel.

The pope is running a bigger fraud than Madoff’s $50 billion ripoff.

What a wonderful day for The Honourable President of the United States of America ... Barrack Obama!
The Republican Party; has self-destructed -- on the grounds of homophobia & religious corruption!
Someone left the door of the asylum ajar -- the religious extremists are loose & they are all in the Republican Party!
Religion; is the biggest bully on the block!

This global financial downturn is all attributable to the one and only; Ben Bernanke … appointed by Bush! He wanted to slow down the buoyant economy while learning on the job -- and it cost the world economy upwards of $6 Trillion. He raised interest rates – week after week after week after week after weak - and watched the meltdown! Hope he learned the meaning of growth.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R., Va.) seems intent on blocking Obama -- from paying the bills -- Republicans left behind … fighting Israel’s ongoing holy war & land grab. As long as NATO will provide soldiers and the U.S. provides the money … Israel pushes this arrogant “better than thou bull….” People don’t accept this chosen &%@# any longer!
NATO military presence in the West Bank -- sorting the illegal land grab of 1967 & expansion of the illegal settlements -- might resolve the global holy war issue with a bigger bang for the buck dealing the root cause – Israeli arrogance!
I look at Emperor Netanyahu; as the big NATO & U.S. tail-wagger & Cantor his butt licker … manipulating the world into trillions of dollars of war debt … cast onto the global taxpayers!
Cantor & Grover Norquist should be treated somewhat … like Romania President; Nicolae Ceausescu – a US government approved … hangin!

Try talking about LOVE and compassion towards the gay community to the evil pope and -- gee should we include Fred Phelps & other lunatic religious extremists?
