REMINDER: SLSD Heads to School Today as Makeup Day
Hurricane Sandy shut down Southern Lehigh for almost a week, so Southern Lehigh School District heads in to school today to make up for time lost.
From the Southern Lehigh School District:
Dear SLSD Community - As a result of the the 2012 hurricane and loss of 4 school days so early in the year, the School Board approved on Nov. 12, 2012 to adjust our school calendar in an attempt to prepare for what is predicted to be a snowy winter. We do not anticipate any 'forgiveness' of days from the State, we are obligated to meet our 180 days AND minimum hours, and we want to make sure our graduates can complete their senior year by June 7 (if at all possible!).
The following days are now days in session and added to our school calendar:
- Monday, Jan. 21- MLK Day;
- Friday, Feb. 15- of Presidents weekend;
- Monday, April 1- Monday of Spring Break.
If we do not need April 1, the Board may vote to return it as a vacation day. We plan to hold the last day already built into the calendar, in reserve, rather than use it first so that hopefully we do not need to further adjust days later in the school year. The Board has also indicated that if necessary, March 28- the Thursday of Spring Break would be the next day they would consider, if more make-up days are needed.
We realize some families may already have travel plans that conflict with these changes. We will work with everyone to deal with these conflicts.
If you have any questions regarding these changes, please discuss them with your building principal.
We are hopeful that weather forecasts for winter will not materialize and the rest of the school year will be uneventful! Thank you for understanding.
