Middle School Mathcounts Team Takes Second

Solehi Middle School wins 2nd place in regional Mathcounts competition, takes home individual awards.

How well do you know your integers? Probably not as well as the 7th- and 8th-graders from Southern Lehigh Middle School's Mathcounts team.

The Southern Lehigh team took second at the 29th Annual Regional Mathcounts competition.

In addition to a team award, two students on the team took home individual medals. Daniel Qian, an 8th-grader, took home fourth overall. As one of the top four, Quain advances to the state championship.

Sarah Mackin, also an 8th grader, was the second highest ranked female competitor.

"They just knocked out all these other schools," said middle school assistant principal Nathan Davidson. "We are just so proud of these kids."

The top four individuals and top team from each state head to Washington, D.C., in May to compete for top national honors. Orefield Middle School in the Parkland School District wont first place at the competition.

The competition was held Sunday, Feb. 10 at Trexler Middle School in Allentown. According to a press release, more than 200 competitors from five counties attended.
