Federal Agency Investigating Toll Increases
General Accounting Office wants to see if Delaware River toll agencies are accountable.
The U.S. General Accounting Office has begun looking into toll increases at Delaware River bridges, according to published reports.
The GAO is investigating the toll increasses set by the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission, the Associated Press reports.
The DRJTBC operates the tolls on Route 22 and Interstate 78 between Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Last year, it raised tolls on all of its bridges, leading to criticism from commuters and local officials.
The GAO probe is focused both on the DRJTBC and the Delaware River Port Authority.
A GAO spokesman told the Express-Times the agency is looking at how these organizations spent the toll increase money, and also at how transparent their decisions were. It also wants to see what kind of oversight there is for transportation authorities.
