Gun Owners Expected to Rally for Jan. 19 'Gun Appreciation Day'

"On 01/19/13 go to your local gun store, gun range or gun show with your Constitution, American flags and your 'Hands Off My Guns' sign to send a loud and clear message to Congress and President Barack Obama," says coalition website.

A conservative group is hoping that tens of thousands turn out to show their support for gun ownership with their pocketbooks and picket signs the day before President Barack Obama is sworn in for a second term.

The group, a coalition brought together for the event, declared Jan. 19 "Gun Appreciation Day." The hope is Americans nationwide will show their support for gun ownership by turning out en masse at gun stores, ranges and shows from coast to coast.

“The Obama administration has shown that it is more than willing to trample the Constitution to impose its dictates upon the American people,” said Gun Appreciation Day chairman Larry Ward in a press release.

The day comes as the gun control debate becomes more divisive. This past week, two PA lawmakers released statements about sponsoring legislation that would allow teachers to carry guns in schools, in response to December's mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT.

In the past year, several high-profile mass shootings -- including one in a Colorado movie theater and one at a Wisconsin Sikh Temple -- sparked the gun control debate. According to a New York Times article, Obama called for Vice President Joe Biden to head a gun control task force.

The "Appreciation Day" is modeled after this past summer's "Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day," the answer to a boycott of the fast food chain after CEO Dan Cathy declared his support of what he termed "traditional marriage." According to ABC News, Chick-Fil-A posted record-setting sales during the "Appreciation Day."

Gun Appreciation Day is scheduled the day before Obama's second inauguration.

The planned event currently includes the following coalition members:

  • Second Amendment Foundation
  • Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms
  • Special Operations Speaks
  • Revolution PAC
  • Citizens and Country
  • Social Security Institute
  • Committee to Draft Judge Andrew Napolitano
  • Conservative Action Alerts
  • Women Warriors PAC
  • Conservative Action Fund
  • Political Media, Inc.

Hopefully an equal or greater number will show up with signs saying "You are wrong ... guns do kill people." No one NEEDS an automatic weapon. Those poor innocents in the Sandy Hook School had up to 11 wounds. Since we obviously don't have a way to keep these guns out of the wrong hands, we need to make them out of the public's hands.

The how (gun) is not the why (reason for the massacre). Look deeper to solve, please. One deranged young man from Newtown, Connecticut, should not be allowed to change the U.S. Constitution. Not one paragraph, not one sentence, not one word. Millions and millions of U.S. citizens have owned guns for more than 230 years. Why do modern-day gang members, drug lords, egotistical madmen and the mentally-ill left untreated, over medicated or not properly cared for get to rule the day? Guns do not kill. People use guns to kill, as well as knives, swords, hatchets, saws, drownings, baseball bats, hockey sticks, lead pipes, automobiles, pillows, bombs, arsenic, chemicals, toxic substances, shoestrings, ropes, fists, fingers, kicks, whips, slaps, stones, rocks, shoves, arson, hammers, screwdrivers, nail guns, (the list is endless). Ban murder.

Cathy,
The terrorist who pulled off the Fort Hood shooting was US Military. His guns didn't kill anyone. HE DID!
Next time my daughter comes home with a test marked with wrong answers should I protest, "THE PENCIL DIDI IT"?
Our 2nd ammendment is there to enable the people to protect themselves not only from criminals, but from a tyranical government. If only the government has guns then freedom would be lost forever. Look at the history of countries who imposed massive gun bans. They are almost always followed by massive tyranny, and in the worst cases, mass killings by the governments.
It's NOT the gun, it's the person using it.

I object to the Patch taking sides. That is not supposed to be your function.

Because the one article that describes something that is pro-2nd Amendment while there were several articles describing anti-2nd Amendment actions is clearly taking sides.

However I think this is largely un-necessary. It has pretty much been "gun appreciation day" at gun shops, ranges, and gun shows every day since November 5th 2008. Despite the horrible economy the gun industry has grown every year. Yet somehow, violent crime rates in the US have declined.. hmm something doesn't seem right with that!?! I thought guns were evil.

I know I lock mine in a safe to make sure that they don't get up on their own accord and commit crimes, but I also took mine to obedience training. Let me tell you that has achieved results, they haven't once loaded themselves on their own and committed crimes, they are very well behaved. I decided to paper train them, they only shoot at paper, well except one, for some reason that one rifle likes to shoot deer. A tragedy I am sure, but it keeps my freezer full.

HI @Cathy, thanks for writing in! I'm always trying to improve my skill set, so I'd love your constructive criticism on the piece. I thought it was just informing the public based on the press release. I can certainly promise equal coverage for any opposing views, this in just the one that was released today. Feel free to email me at elizabeth.rich@patch.com. Thanks again!

Elizabeth, your report isn't biased at all. Like you said, it just reports a story.

If your report was biased in the conservative direction, that would be one time vs. 1 million liberal articles on the Patch. So don't sweat it.

Hi everyone,

There seems to be a delay on comments for this article. I'm sitting in front of the computer approving everything that comes in. Comment away with impunity!

I have apologized to Elizabeth for saying she was supporting Gun Appreciation Day. I read the lead in and emotionally responded. I now see that it was a quote.
I am responding here to say to Elizabeth in public as I have in private email that I am sorry I reacted so emotionally. She was not being biased. I have suggested to her that maybe she should have not started out with the quote she did.

As all of you other responders appear to favor guns, that's your privilege and right. Love them, pet them, take them to bed with you for all I care. But, I also have the right to my opinion regarding guns. That is .. if you are hunting or target shooting .. fine. But in my opinion, no one needs an automatic weapon.

I will not respond to any more posts. I will not debate this.

Cathy,
How can we have a conversation if you refuse to engage in debate. I always like to hear from folks who have opposing views as to "why" they feel the way they do.
Responding emotionally is exactly what DC is doing now. If you know anything about "why" the second amendment exists, you'll have to at least acknowledge those reasons were NOT for hunting and target shooting.
We are ever facing the very tyranny from government that our founders warned against and made sure that we could always defend against.

Dumbo... learn what an AUTOMATIC weapon is. No new AUTOMATIC weapons are being made. Stop watching Rachel Maddow and petting your cats.

All your responses are emotional. That's the only way you can support an assault weapon ban when assault weapons kill 300 annually, and NOT support an alcohol ban when it kills 12,000 in cars, and another 100,000+ from disease. Not to mention the problems it causes with child neglegt and abuse, spousal abuse, depression, suicide and so on.

It the only reason you don't support banning swimming pools, which kill 500 to 750 per year, and brain damage another 1500.

You are a silly, illogical person, who only seeks to ban what you neither understand or use. HAMMERS kill more than guns. Want to have background checks for hammers? WHY NOT? Because you are a silly little person who should not even be able to vote.
