5. Today in History: On July 7, 1983, U.S. fifth-grader Samantha Smith made international headlines when she visited the Soviet Union. Smith, who wrote a letter to Soviet leader Yuri Andropov, was invited on a tour of the then-Communist country. Many Americans viewed the trip as a propaganda machine, but Smith thought that the Soviets "want no harm to the world, just like us.”
